Small Kine Schnauzers
Our Story
Welcome to Small Kine Schnauzers. We are a family owned and operated business that have had dogs as part of our family for generations. We are located on Oahu's Windward Coast between the Koolau mountains and the ocean. All of our Schnauzers live in our home and are part of the family. We have a large fenced in grass area where all of our Schnauzers run and play daily. We also have a 600 square foot multi-purpose covered patio that acts as a bathing, grooming, and play area during wet weather.
It all started 5 years ago when we purchased a Schnauzer Maltese mix and fell in love with the the Schnauzer breed. When we wanted to add to our fur family we had a hard time finding a Schnauzer breeder in Hawaii. Our breeding moms and dads are subject to genetic testing through Embark and do not have any detected genetic health conditions. They were selected for their personality, size, color and coat from well known breeders in Utah and Texas. Please see our links to each Mom and Dad for more information.
Our Breeding Philosophy
We believe in responsible breeding. All our moms and dads have been chosen for their health, temperament, size, color and coat.
Health: We worked with well known and reputable breeders in Utah and Texas to ensure that our moms and dads come from healthy lines. A DNA Test through Embark is also done on our dogs to ensure that they are not at increased risk for genetic health conditions. Embark tests for breed relevant genetic conditions and 230 other known genetic conditions. Each mom and dad has a link to their genetic test results.
Temperament: We chose to breed Schnauzers because they are known to be highly intelligent, easily trained, playful, friendly and great for families. Our moms and dads have been selected because they exhibit these traits.
Size: Our moms and dads come from toy sized (7-11 pounds) lines. This size is perfect for families that are looking for a companion that is big enough to play with kids yet small enough to adapt to apartment life.
Coat: We breed megacoated schnauzers that are considered hypoallergenic because they are low-shedding dogs. (similar to Maltese, Poodle, Yorkshire Terrier) . This is a description of the coat types. Traditional: Regular (smooth and soft) or wiry (coarse). Super Coat: Has a little more volume than the Traditional and is normally soft. Mega Coat: The most volume and is soft.
Puppy Development from 1 to 8 weeks
Week 1-3:
Mom and puppies are in a whelping box next to a special bed setup in our living room to ensure that every puppy eats every 2 hours. We weigh the puppies everyday to make sure they are gaining weight. (click here to see picture)
Puppies are subject to early neurological stimulation (ENS) from day 3-16.
Week 4:
We increase the size of the whelping and box and begin potty pad training. We place artificial grass in a part of the whelping box and encourage the puppies to use the bathroom on the grass. (click here to see video)
Expose the dogs to various noises (TV, vacuum, etc.)
